Birinci Endüstri Devrimi üretimin makineleşmesi, İkinci Endüstri Devrimi üretimin serileşmesi olarak tanımlanırken, Üçüncü Endüstri Devrimi ise üretimin otomasyonu ve sayısallaşması olarak tanımlandı. Bu dönemde bilgisayar, mikroelektronik, fiber optik, lazer gibi teknolojilerin, telekomünikasyon, nükleer, biyotarım ve biyogenetik gibi bilimlerin gelişimi üretimin yönünü ve biçimini etkiledi. İletişim ve ulaşımdaki gelişmelerle, ticaret ve endüstri globalleşti.

Bütün bu gelişmelerin, daha önce mümkün olmayan yeniliklere imkân tanımasının yanı sıra, siber-fiziksel sistemler, Nesnelerin ve Hizmetlerin İnterneti gibi faktörlerin de etkisiyle, içinde bulunduğumuz Sanayide Dijital Dönüşüm-Dördüncü Endüstri Devrimi başladı. Bu dönemin temelinde yatan ve Üçüncü Endüstri Devrimi’nden bu yana gelişen robotlar/robotik teknolojisi ve ileri otomasyon sistemleri, insan müdahalesine asgari düzeyde ihtiyaç duyarak 7/24 çalışan üretim tesislerinin kurulmasını sağladı. İnsan faktörünün her an devrede olmasına gerek bırakmayan bu ortamlarda, düşük seviyeli aydınlatma yapılması veya üretimin tamamen karanlıkta gerçekleştirilmesi de düşünülür hale geldi ve böylece insansız fabrika fikri ortaya atıldı.

Karanlık fabrikalar (lights-out manufacturing) adı verilen bu üretim metodolojisi, tam otomasyon ile eş anlamlı kabul edilmektedir. Endüstri 4.0’ın benimsediği bütünleşik ve kesintisiz geliştirme ve üretim süreçleri de işte bu nihai hedefe doğru ilerlemektedir. İleri düzeyde otomasyon ve dijitalizasyon sayesinde insan odaklı iş gücü çok daha farklı alanlara odaklanmaya, birçok fabrika ve üretim tesisi de Endüstri 4.0 ile karanlık ortamda üretim yapmaya başlayacaktır.
Her ne kadar fabrikaların karartılması sözkonusu ise de, Sanayide Dijital Dönüşüm - Endüstri 4.0 ile bizlerin ve gelecek nesillerin çok daha parlak bir geleceğe sahip olmaları en büyük hedeflerimizdendir.
